How to File ITR Online Step By Step Procedure

Filing Income Tax Return is not a difficult task. If you have an understanding of the Income Tax Laws related to your Head of Income, you can file it yourself or hire some tax expert or approach a Chartered Accountant to file ITR on your behalf.

#1 The ITR can be filled from the Government’s official website i.e

#2 The Assessee has to first register themselves on the Income Tax India Official Portal for e-filing of ITR.

#3 The credentials will be asked for registering yourself on the Income Tax portal are Name of the Assessee, his date of Birth, and the Permanent Account Number. The details in your PAN will act as a proof of your registration procedure.

#4 After completing your registration, you will be forwarded to choose the mode of E-filing ITR.

  1. The modes of filing ITR are as follows –
    1. In the first mode, the assessee has to download the form from the Income Tax India Portal, fill the required details related to his income and submit it back on the portal.
    2. In the second method, the assessee has an option to fill the form directly through the portal instead of downloading it.

#5 After choosing the mode of filing ITR, now you need to select the required form depending on the source of your Income. Forms available on the portal are ITR-1, ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5, ITR-6 and ITR-7 also.

#6 Assessee needs to attach particular document while filling the ITR. Such documents are as follows –

    1. Certificates of Tax Deducted at Source
    2. Details of Investment
    3. Form 16
    4. Form 16A
    5. Proof of Loans (if any) etc.

#7 After filling the details of your Income, you should verify it again before submitting to prevent any error.

#8 Assessee should note that the tax must be fully paid before submitting the form.

#9 Once, you have submitted the form, an acknowledgment will be generated by the system. The acknowledgment will be referred to as ITR-V and it shows that your form has been successfully submitted or your ITR has been successfully filled.  This acknowledgment shall also be sent on the email address which is registered with the Income Tax Department.

The assessee can file his Income Tax Return himself but if you are not aware of the Income Tax Laws related to your Income, you should approach some Chartered Accountant or a tax expert to file ITR on your behalf.
